How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
Majoring in English prepared me to research key points or decisions and to articulate plans, in writing. The objectives vary by business purpose. My job is to make plans and commitments and to find innovative solutions or technology. The process includes analysis of "what happened" and "where do we go from here."
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Reading captivated me as a child. Living in a rural area, the book mobile visits were real highlights of my summer. I read daily. As an English major, I learned more about authors from different centuries, their lives and work. The motivating factors for their work became another interest. In my work and life, travels take me to Asia, Europe, South America, all-around the U.S., North and Central America. One reason I am comfortable going to new places is because I've already been to most places in a book.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
Nothing gets built without the skills of craft professionals. Learn how to do something that requires hands, mind and physical work. It's fun and rewarding in that the results are sustainable.
